About the Artist:
Kahori Kamiya was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1980 and moved to New York, where she received her MFA in fine art from the School of Visual Arts. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in New York, Los Angeles, Ukraine (Kiev), Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg), Thailand (Chiang Mai), and Japan (Tokyo and Saitama) and will be screened in Houston and Canada (Montreal) in 2010.
Her videos, installations, and sculptures focus on the global taboos, cultural myths, and idiosyncrasies of current events/ideas using various images from world news, social phenomena, and the Internet. Also, rooted in her personal experience as a Japanese woman, all her works consistently investigate the dynamics of gender both spiritually and physically.
In 2009, she was the recipient of an award for the Russian Art-Week International Competition of Contemporary Arts. In 2010, Kamiya was a winner of Top 40 of the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art in LA. Also, her video was selected by Phong Bui and will be shown at SoHo 20 chelsea Gallery this July. Kahori currently lives and works in New York.
